Wildlife and Natural Scenery
Wildlife
We have a lot of wildlife in the area. You can frequently see donkeys, big horn sheep, coyotes, rabbits, rattlesnakes, squirrels, lizards, and tons of birds. The one to be on the lookout for the most is the Desert Tortoise, they are on the protective endangered list of animals by the US government. The Desert Tortoise will occasionally hide under cars for shade, so please look under your car before you leave. If a tortoise, Gila monster, chuckwalla, or snake is encountered, they must be avoided. Participants and tour guides shall not harass or collect these reptiles. No vehicle or participant shall approach any closer than (5) feet of tortoises or Gila monsters. No handling of tortoise or Gila monsters is authorized. If any Gila monster is encountered during permitted activities, they must be reported immediately to the Nevada Division of Wildlife at (702) 486-5127, to the potential experience they can expect.
Scenery
The El Dorado Wilderness is a land of rugged peaks and ridges cut by wide washes, canyons and narrow drainages. It is located in the El Dorado Mountains, the prominent and scenic ridge that rises between U.S. 95 and the Colorado River. El Dorado refers to a legendary city of gold. This name was likely chosen for this area because of mining activities that once occurred here, like the Techatticup Mine. The wilderness includes Oak Creek Canyon, Lonesome Wash, and four high spots east of Oak Creek that rise to about 1,200 feet, which is about 500 feet above the Colorado River.
