The Colorado River at Eldorado Canyon
Where the Desert Meets the Water, 45 Minutes from the Las Vegas Strip
The Colorado River flows along the base of Eldorado Canyon near Nelson, Nevada, about 45 minutes south of the Las Vegas Strip. Most visitors to Las Vegas never know this stretch of river exists. Traveling to the river via four-wheel drive takes about 45 minutes one way on the dirt road, riding RZRs through miles of Mojave Desert terrain before the canyon opens up and the water appears.
Select Awesome Adventures tours include a stop at the Colorado River as part of the larger Eldorado Canyon ride. After desert trails, a ghost town, and a 160-year-old gold mine, the river feels like a different world. It is one of those places that most people never discover, a secluded stretch of water surrounded by canyon walls where the only sound is the current and the wind.
A River That Built a Mining Empire
Long before modern highways connected southern Nevada, the Colorado River was the lifeline of the region. After gold was discovered in 1861, the river became the fastest and most reliable way to move heavy mining equipment and ore through this rugged part of the state. Steamboats carried ore downstream from the Techatticup Mine to processing facilities and delivered food, tools, and other essentials back to the growing mining camps upstream.
The river transformed what was once an isolated canyon into an important transportation corridor, helping the mines and surrounding communities grow during the Wild West era. Supplies, equipment, and people all traveled by water because the overland routes through the desert were unreliable and dangerous.
Today, the Colorado River tells a different story. Instead of steamboats and mining shipments, visitors discover crystal-clear water winding through dramatic canyon walls, scenic overlooks, and peaceful desert landscapes that contrast beautifully with the rugged terrain above.

What the River Stop Looks Like
The river stop is where the tour shifts gears. After miles of desert trails, canyon walls, ghost town exploration, and mine history, the ride opens up to the Colorado River. Guests enjoy a group lunch and picnic on the riverbank with canyon walls rising on both sides and no public road in sight. During the warmer months, the stop includes swimming, a small hike down to the water, and a jump spot into the river.
The contrast is what makes it memorable. The dry heat of the Mojave Desert gives way to cool water and shade along the river. It is quiet and secluded, the kind of place that feels like it should be much farther from Las Vegas than 45 minutes. Most guests say the river stop is the part of the tour they did not expect and the part they remember most.

Part of a Bigger Adventure
The Colorado River stop is one part of a larger Eldorado Canyon off-road tour.
